  Evelyn

After being beaten up and almost killed by my lover, I was finally home from the hospital. It felt good to be in my own bed, without anyone poking me with needles or trying to tell me what I needed to do to get well. I was already feeling better, especially after my ongoing visits from my BFF’s, Kayla and Trina. I was delighted and super excited that we were able to put our issues behind us and become friends again.

Our friendship journey had been a long one. We had had ups and downs, even a few betrayals. It shocked the hell out of me that Kayla had finally forgiven me for having sex with Cedric, her husband at the time, and, in addition to that, getting knocked up by him. I’d had an abortion, and at the time, I had felt as if it was something I needed to do.

Then there was Trina. Lord knows, I had done some reckless things to her too. I had interfered with her loving but shaky relationship with Keith, only because he had seemed as if he was trying to get into my panties. After further evaluation, I had realized that I was dead wrong. He appeared to love Trina to death. I had misjudged him, just like I had misjudged his brother, Bryson. Looks were deceiving, and he was the reason I had been in the hospital. When I said he had beaten my ass, I meant it. He. Had. Beaten. My. Ass. I had thought I was going to die that day. I had started seeing bright white lights, but thankfully, God hadn’t been ready for me yet. Now that the dust had settled, and I was feeling 100 percent again, he was going to pay for putting his hands on me.

Bryson was upset because I had told a few people that I had caught him getting his freak on with a transgender man. Many people thought I was lying, but I would never spread a vicious rumor like that unless I had all the facts. I knew good and well what I had witnessed that day. He knew it too, but he continued to lie and make me look like the villain.

My intentions were to sue the hell out of him. His rich parents had already hired an attorney, and they truly believed that I was some kind of broke bitch who wouldn’t be able to defend myself. While I didn’t have much money—well, honestly, I was broke and didn’t have a job—I still knew of one person in particular who had cash and was willing to help me out of this mess. He had come to rescue me while I was laid up in the hospital, feeling sorry for myself and worried about my situation. While Cedric and I unquestionably had our differences, those differences had been kicked to the curb and set aside for another day. According to him, he wanted to help me. And if he was able to, then I had no problem helping him.

I lay comfortably in my bed, with a fluffy pillow tucked between my legs, thinking about his brief visit at the hospital that day. Who would have thought that he would be the one to ultimately save me from what I was about to face with Bryson and his family?

Cedric strutted into the room with a card in his hand and a smile across his face. “Hey there, stranger,” he said, walking farther into the room. “Baby, how are you feeling?”

Baby, my ass. Save it, I thought. “Better,” was all I said, trying to keep our conversation short.

Cedric laid the card on the table, then sat in the chair beside my bed. He crossed his legs and massaged his hands. “So, when are you getting out of this place?” he asked.

My tone was very nasty. “In a few days. Why?”

“Because I kind of miss my partner in crime. Kind of need you to handle some things for me. If you do, there will be some great rewards.”

I was slumped down in the bed, then sat up to give him my full attention. “What kind of things do you want me to handle? And I’d like to hear more about those rewards.”

Cedric passed me an envelope and asked me to open it and read the letter inside. I did. It was a letter from Paula Daniels, the woman I thought had attempted to kill him. According to the letter, she wanted to speak to Cedric ASAP about his son, Jacoby’s, involvement. That was all she said on the subject, but she also assured him that everything wasn’t what it seemed to be. I slowly folded the letter and gave it back to Cedric. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I asked Cedric why he couldn’t handle this.

“Jacoby is fragile, and Kayla is weak. I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. Plus, I’m always being lied to. That’s why I need you. I need someone like you to check things out for me, and since Kayla is back on your team, maybe you can find out what’s really going on for me.”

A part of me didn’t want to be used by Cedric again, but I still wanted to hear about those rewards.

“If I do get involved, what’s in this for me?”

  “Depends.”

  “Depends on what?”

“Depends on what you want or what you need. Like a lawyer to help you fight your case, a new house, sex, whatever you want.”

“Hmm, but you haven’t said the magic word yet. The one thing that energizes me and turns me into the woman I always wanted to be. A rich woman.”

Cedric snapped his fingers and smiled. “Oh yeah, that’s right. I almost forgot. How could I forget about that? Money, right? However much your heart desires, as long as it’s within reason.”

I laughed, then shot him a slow wink. “It’s a good thing that you know me so well, Cedric. But let me think about this. When I get out of here, I’ll definitely be in touch.”

The fortunate thing was, I hadn’t waited until I got out of the hospital to put a plan in motion. I had spoken to Cedric almost every day since his visit. He had already made contact with Bryson’s parents, and a meeting to try to resolve all this crap was scheduled for this Friday. I couldn’t wait to tell his parents my side of the story—they definitely needed to hear what kind of animal their son was, if they didn’t already know. I figured that Keith would be there too. That way, he would finally know the truth about his brother and stop hating on me.

He and Trina stayed into it about who was telling the truth. Keith took his brother’s side; Trina took mine. But no matter whose side anybody was on, for the time being, I was glad about Cedric having my back. I made him aware that I didn’t want Trina or Kayla to know that he and I had reconciled some of our differences. If they knew we were friends again, I was positive that they would think I was trying to betray them again and that they would cut me off. Then I wouldn’t be able to get Cedric the information he had requested about Jacoby and Kayla.

There seemed to be a big secret they had been keeping from Cedric. It revolved around him being shot. Paula Daniels was behind bars for the remainder of her life, but Cedric wasn’t exactly sure that she was the one responsible for trying to take him down. If anybody knew the real deal, Kayla did. And if she had been keeping a secret, I was positive that I could get it out of her. Whatever information I found out, I intended to pass on to Cedric. It would be up to him to decide what to do with that information. After that, I wanted nothing else to do with him and our business would be done.

Friday was here before I knew it. I was well rested, and for the first time in a long time, I felt good about my future. I was currently unemployed, I didn’t have much money in my bank account, and this apartment was starting to close in on me. I hated it here, but today I felt that a life-changing event was about to take place. Something inside told me that this meeting would work out in my favor.

Cedric was supposed to pick me up within the hour. I had been thinking too much about the outcome and wasn’t even ready yet. Also, I’d gotten tied up on the phone with Trina. She had called earlier to check on me, and we had wound up spending thirty minutes on the phone, during which she’d bragged about her and Keith’s trip to New York. While it had sounded like they’d had a good time, I had to cut her off quickly. I’d told her I had to go into the bathroom to shower, but technically, I’d needed to hurry up and get dressed before Cedric got here. He was a man who didn’t appreciate waiting on others.

I didn’t want to get left behind, so I hurried to straighten my honey-blond hair, which was parted down the middle. With so much body, my permed hair hung almost six inches past my shoulders and flowed midway down my back. My thin brows had been arched, and very little makeup covered my flawless light skin. I wore a sleeveless money-green dress that hugged my hourglass figure. It was made of linen and was cut slightly above my knees. A white cropped jacket really set my outfit off, but not as much as my gold high heels, which matched my accessories. I refused to go in front of Bryson’s parents looking like a broke trick. That was what they probably expected. I had to represent, and when I looked at myself in the mirror, I was 110 percent pleased.

Right after I slid some shimmery nude gloss on my lips, I heard a light knock at the door. There was a time when Cedric had a key to let himself in, but times had surely changed. He would never get another key to my place, especially since he had put his hands on me before. He’d hit me in my mouth, causing my teeth to crack. That wasn’t a good look for me, and I had had to sell a couple pairs of my red-bottom shoes to get my teeth fixed. I’d been so upset with him that day, and I had vowed never to deal with him again. But he was in a position to help me now, so I rolled with it.

When I opened the door and saw Cedric standing on the other side, I had a slight change of heart. Giving him another key could, indeed, be possible. He rocked a casual pair of black jeans that had that satisfying dick of his looking scrumptious and sitting pretty. A black leather jacket covered the deep blue button-down shirt he wore, and his Caesar cut was flowing with hella waves. His Hershey’s chocolate skin was smooth, and I had to confess that he looked good enough to eat. He checked me out, too, before coming inside and asking if I was ready.

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” I said. “All I need to do is go to my bedroom and get my purse.”

I pivoted and made my way to the bedroom. My hips purposely swayed from side to side. I was positive that my ass was doing all that it needed to do, and that Cedric wouldn’t be able to resist checking it out. I wasn’t exactly sure if he and Kayla were still intimate with each other or not, even though they were now divorced. But I would be sure to inquire about it the next time she and I spoke. Then again, maybe I needed to stanch these little feelings for Cedric and back off. I was just feeling a little horny, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized that nothing excited me about having sex with a man who had been shot up. He probably had numerous yucky bullet holes in his body, and from what I had heard, Paula Daniels had done some major damage to him. I had to see Cedric with all his clothes off before I made a decision to go there with him again.

After I got my purse, we left my place and headed to Cedric’s car. He politely opened the passenger door for me, and the second I got inside, I got a whiff of his brand-new Audi. The leather seat hugged my body like a glove, and as he drove us to our destination, I almost fell asleep. That could have also been due to our boring time in the car. Our conversation was sporadic, until he asked if I’d had an opportunity to ask Kayla if she’d been keeping any secrets from him.

“No, I haven’t had a chance to go there with her yet. We’ve spoken only twice since I’ve been home. She called to check on me, and then she called while she was at the grocery store and asked if I needed anything. She stopped by that day to drop off some of the things I requested, but she was in a rush. Said she had to pick up Jacoby from somewhere.”

Cedric nodded while looking straight ahead, as if he were in deep thought. His grip on the steering wheel got tighter, and after he stopped at a red light, he turned to look at me.

“That’s cool and everything, but hurry up and see what you can find out for me,” he said. “I need something solid soon. I know you’ve been concerned about taking care of this shit with Bryson, but please don’t forget about our agreement.”

“I promise you that I won’t forget. You have come through for me in a major way, and I owe you big-time. I will find out what I can, but I don’t want to be so obvious. Kayla and I just started talking again. It may be a minute before she trusts me again. Just be patient, okay?”

The light turned green. Cedric drove off and spoke in a commanding tone. “I don’t mind being patient, but after today you need to step it up a little. I need to know what’s been going on behind my back. Just the other day, Kayla and Jacoby were whispering about something. I pulled her aside, inquired about it, but she said it was nothing. She was real nervous, and he’s the same way when I come around. I also can’t get the thoughts of her breaking into my house out of my mind. She was looking for something that day. What? I don’t know yet, but I do know that you have a better chance of finding out what she was looking for than me.”

Something wasn’t quite adding up for me. Cedric was a smart man. He could easily do his own dirty work. There was more to this, and I also thought he was kind of upset that Kayla, Trina, and I were friends again. He couldn’t stand it, and there was a possibility that he would do whatever he thought was necessary to destroy our friendship. That, to me, was obvious, and it could very well be his motive for getting me involved in this current scheme.

Several minutes later Cedric pulled into an arched driveway that accommodated at least twenty cars. The ranch-style home to my right was breathtaking. It sat on acres and acres of well-manicured land. An Olympic-sized pool to the right could be seen from afar. I was in awe as my eyes scanned the property, which was located in Wildwood, Missouri. Several miles outside of St. Louis, this city was known for housing some of the area’s wealthier people, as well as celebrities. Cedric’s house and Kayla’s new condo weren’t too far away. Kayla had definitely become a winner after their divorce, but not at the level of this. Keith and Bryson’s parents had it going on, without a doubt.

“Close your mouth,” Cedric said, looking in the rearview mirror while brushing his waves. “Act like you’ve been to a place like this before, and remain calm, no matter what. I told them I was your uncle, and I’m here with you because I’m concerned about Bryson hurting you again. I can assure you that they don’t want to see this mess play out in a courtroom, so they will throw some money on the table. Whatever their offer is, I want thirty percent for my troubles.”

I tossed my head back, then let out a soft “Tuh.” He was already filthy rich. What good was 30 percent going to do him?

“Thirty percent, Cedric? Really? You know that I’ve been suffering financially for quite some time. I barely have enough money to pay my bills, and you know that hospital bill isn’t going to be cheap. Not to mention that I don’t even have a job. I need every dime I can get. I don’t know how much they will offer me, or if they will offer me anything at all. We don’t know what kind of people we’re dealing with, but agreeing to give you thirty percent may not work for me.”

He shrugged, as if he didn’t give a damn about anything I’d said. “Thirty percent, or I walk. Right here. Right now. I’ll blow this deal wide open and let you go to court with a cheap, inexperienced lawyer and try to settle
this. The choice is yours.”

I sat thinking about what other choice I had. Cedric was a dirty muthafucka, and he’d taken greed to a new level. I finally responded by opening the door and getting out of the car. I guessed he figured that we had a deal, because he climbed out of the car and then walked to the front door with me, displaying a crooked smile on his face.

I reached out and rang the doorbell. Seconds later a prissy black woman with long salt-and-pepper braids answered the door. She wore an African caftan dress that flowed past her ankles, almost touching the floor. Sandals were on her feet, and her sweet perfume blew right outside the door. There was no smile whatsoever on her face, but she extended her hand to me first.

“My name is Netta,” she said. “My husband and son are in the great room, waiting for you.”

For the first time in a long time, I felt a little nervous. I shook her hand, then introduced myself, as well. Cedric followed suit. As we entered the house, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The ceilings were roughly twelve feet tall, and that didn’t include the great room ceiling, which was almost double. Swirling tan and white marble covered the floors, and someone’s initials had been inscribed in the foyer in gold. The curved double staircases in the foyer were black and gold, and the crystal chandelier set everything off. The gallery was filled with black-and-white pictures of their family. Keith and Bryson appeared to be their only children, but there were also pictures of a little girl too.

The oversize bay windows in the far back lit up the whole place, and when I turned my head to the left, I could see a luxury kitchen with not one, but two granite-topped islands. This place was sick! It was in Trina’s best interests to somehow or someway become a part of this family, and to do so very soon by marrying Keith. If Trina didn’t already know it, she had hit the damn jackpot. I just didn’t understand why she and Kayla were always so lucky. I had never been lucky enough to find a single man or one with wealthy parents whom I could benefit from.
